Fancy an exhilarating skip over the waves with the moist wind in your face? Or perhaps exploring varying landscape of woodland, forest, parkland and wetland is more your line?

Then again, maybe your particular interest lies in history and heritage, shopping, visitor attractions, crafts, outdoor or indoor activity pursuits?

Whatever your choice, look no further... the Fermanagh Lakelands has it all!

In fact, the special appeal of this attractive holiday destination in the North-West of Ireland is that you don't have to make any hard decisions. With such an array of natural amenities and well-developed facilities available within a short radius, you can avail of many options and enjoy a truly memorable stay.

You will be amazed by Fermanagh's Lough Erne, one of the most uncongested and impressive lakes in Europe. The Erne is made up of two channels, the Lower and the Upper Loughs. In the middle, stands the island town of Enniskillen. The lake is a veritable paradise for all kinds of watersports.

Fish to your heart's content on the lake or nearby rivers for salmon or trout. You will be assured of wonderful facilities and back-up, ranging from ghillies to boat hire.

Cruise the lakes with day boat trips or take the wheel and hire a cruiser of your own (see also Shannon Erne Waterway).

Alternatively, use the 50km stretch of waterway on Lough Erne as an ideal base for a canoeing trek. Or try out a range of other water sports at one of the adventure or activity centres operating on the lake or in the vicinity.

Don't forget, too, that there is another fine lake waiting to be explored in Fermanagh. Upper and Lower Lough McNean, near the village ofBelcoo, also offers many possibilities.

If you can drag yourself away from the water, there's much to see and do in the surrounding countryside. You can enjoy the gentle pleasure of hill-walking, exploring stunning forest parks or admiring nature reserves. Go bird watching at Castle Caldwell, cycling on the Kingfisher Trail or walking along the Sliabh Beagh Way. Venture underground and explore mysterious subterranean waterways and secretive caves! (see Marble Arch)

Interesting villages and visitor attractions are dotted along the way, waiting to be explored. One example is historicBelleek on Lower Lough Erne, famous the world over for its pottery.

Then there are the many megalithic tombs and stately homes steeped in history to be explored. Not to mention the first-class restaurants, homely cafes and welcoming pubs that will whet your appetite, whatever your tastes.

The name, Fermanagh Lakelands, may conjure up images of just water-based activities and all things aquatic. All that is certainly there in abundance and to a very high standard... but, there's much, much more to the region as a splendid holiday destination.
