Image of Dunlcue Castle on the Causeway CoastA spectacular setting with amazing ocean views, matched only by the tumultuous events that occurred here over the centuries. Memories of colourful clans, famous battles and great tragedies.

Capture a truly unique image of Ireland and visit 14th century Dunluce Castle on the northern shores of Antrim.

You will be spellbound by the sight of this historic castle, which is regarded as the most romantic and picturesque in the whole country.

What a setting! Along a rugged coastline, shaped by the seas for centuries, stands this imposing edifice. It looks as if it is clinging fast to the cliff top!

Matching the dramatic location is the castle's turbulent history. Find out all about its chequered past at the visitor centre, where guided tours are also available.

Hear about how it was originally occupied by the MacQuillan family and, later, the MacDonnells, with many battles ensuing between the two clans. Be fascinated by different tales concerning the castle, including how a Scottish chieftain occupier, Sorley Boy MacDonnell, had a falling out with Queen Elizabeth I of England in the late 16th century.

As you explore this spectacular setting, imagine what it was like when a bad storm caused havoc here one night. Part of the castle broke off and the kitchen plunged into the sea, killing all the cooks and kitchen-hands. There remains a dark hollow to this day.

With evidence of an underground passage under one of the towers, it is likely that a fort existed on this spot long before the 14th century. No wonder there are many myths and legends associated with it!

From this vantage point, enjoy fine views of the ocean from Bushmills to Donegal and round to Islay island on the west coast of Scotland.

As you look out to sea, spare a thought for the 240 people who perished following an emigrant ship tragedy in April 1857. Here at the centre, the story is told of how the 'Exmouth', bound for Quebec, spent almost three days in horrendous sea conditions before finally breaking up on rocks off Islay.
