Old churches usually offer an intimate experience but, for something really special, visit this famous tiny chapel in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

Step inside the miniscule structure and cast your mind back to the 19th century, and to an intriguing tale of love. Following the death of his wife, Mary Josephine two years earlier, local rich merchant, Edward Costello, commissioned this remarkable chapel in her memory in 1877.

Look in wonder at its size - just 5m long, 4m wide and 9m high. Then see how the heartbroken husband spared no expense, and placed his late wife's embalmed body there to rest in peace.

As you walk up the small aisle, whisper a prayer for Mary and Edward, who lie in coffins lined with lead and covered with slabs of reinforced glass at either side. Edward's remains were placed there after he died in 1891, so that he would rest close to his beloved wife.
